Last year we worked closely with two British master printmakers Merlyn Chesterman, Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and Rod Nelson, to produce a 2-hour DVD and download ‘Making Woodblock Prints’. This two-hour workshop covers nine topics, presenting an easy to follow introduction to the ancient art of woodblock printing.

About the DVD ‘Making Woodblock Prints’

Block Printing has a long history dating as far back as the 2nd century CE, originating in China. Many will associate this form of printing with world-famous ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ a Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai. With a few simple materials, the myriad of possible woodcut effects are endless and the results vary from delicate to dynamic.

Chesterman and Nelson share their obvious passion for this art form making it accessible to every viewer. Printmaking has sustained them throughout their long and eminent careers as leaders in their field. Chesterman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and her work graces the collections of the V&A and the Ashmolean Museum. She regularly teaches from her Devon studio and at West Dean College.

Rod Nelson is a self taught printmaker who also teaches at West Dean College. He exhibits nationally at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and also internationally. The pair published the book Making Woodblock Prints in 2015. You can benefit from their combined expertise, hard won shortcuts and techniques. Avoid frustration, save time and learn the art of woodblock printing processes step by step.

Listen to the sound of the tool cutting. There’s our first cut,” Rod Nelson looks up and smiles, delighted to share his printmaking world with you.
