heartseed

“heartseed” linocut by Simone Adler

my name is Simone Adler and I live in Seattle. I’m new to printmaking, and excited about it! this is my first linocut. I painted the colors with watercolor first, tracing a template to line it up, then printed with black ink using a wooden spoon for my baren.

the seed is a heart, representing love at the center of growth. the rainbow is represented because of the incredible beauty that is naturally an effect of elements coming together… symbolizing what is possible with collaboration.

shout out to my mom, artist Marlene D’Orazio Adler (here is her print for Print Day in May & her website) who encouraged me to participate in this today. as a printmaker, papermaker, painter, photographer, and mixed-media, multimedia artist, my mom has always inspired my creativity. as I get into printmaking now, it’s really sweet to connect and talk with her about it! she recently sent me a box of tools and ink (plus a smock!) and paper.

also shout to my friend Andrea Marcos (check out her website) who recently taught a linocut 101 class, where I started the linocut block for this print. I learned a lot from Andera about the political history of printmaking, and how to get started!

  1. Your print is very beautiful and powerful. The lines are strong and the colors convey strength and intensity. The symbolism of the heart seed’s message expresses how important it is to collaborate with one another especially now during these challenging times. As you are new to printmaking, I am impressed with your work and proud that you are my daughter.
