Ted Shaine The Printmaking that I have concentrated on involves woodcutting and linoleum carving. Both these techniques are incredibly slow and require considerable effort to make the pieces achieve what I’m looking for. It’s at times frustrating and therapeutic in terms of the amount of hours involved in just the carving of just one block. I don’t have a printing press so I hand print with a Japanese Barren. I produce very limited editions of my work. The technology, if it could be called technology, I’m using is hundreds of years old and painstakingly slow. Most importantly it’s the process of drawing and carving with hand made Japanese tools and hand printing the work that transports me. The satisfaction of producing an almost perfect print with the understanding that no two prints are exactly the same rewards me with an extremely satisfying experience. I learned this craft when I was a teenager and I’m always looking for ways and techniques to experiment with. The ink the tools the heavy imported archival paper are all part of this ancient discipline that intrigues me. My graphic work is in the permanent collection of MoMA in NYC.
