PDIM Inaugarates New Print Studio

I, Liz Egan, was excited to inaugarate my new Print Studio with two of my favorite printers, Helen Cantrell, who was doing woodcuts, and Nancy Whitcher, who was doing monoprints on my new Takach 2448 Press. I was working on drawing fluid silkscreen using Speedball Inks and Transparent Base on Arnhem paper. After four reduction layers, I took the print off registration and used Caran’ D’Ache crayons with transparent base to transfer them to the print. Finally, I created a handcut stencil, with block printing inks thinned with transparent base. I love Print Day in May! www.lizegan.com Thanks to all the sponsors who support the work of printmakers.

Most works begin with a painting from i done from observation. This allows me to understand the composition. No longer tethered to the 'should' of a compositional element, I express the essential elements that communicate the idea. Working a small edition of 4-6 prints, I layer many methods and techniques of woodcut, silkscreen, and monotype. With each layer I clarify or obfiscate. My printing practice feels very responsive like painting. I listen to the needs and direction of each of the prints and allow each to have its own unique voice.
